Another day, another Google service, another place to search for "Science Fiction". The earliest reference seems to be around 1898. It's a bit tricky because there's lots of entries for "science, fiction".

I had a quick search through The Times looking for "science fiction".
The first metnion I could find was in an article from Monday, Oct 16, 1950 about Exploring the Solar System by Fred Hoyle.

Yeah, I thought that Gernsback had invented the term in the 1930's. Wells called his Science Romances or something.

Anyone out there have a definitive answer?
