The book meme

It's a meme thing. Tagged by John@SFSignal. So here goes...

UPDATE : I'm going to tag someone who actually might do it. Dave, even though your're a movie geek, talk about books for a post.

1. One book that changed your life?

The BBC Microcomputer Guide To Basic. It was a reference manual for the BASIC programming language on the BBC Acorn Micro.

2. One book you have read more than once?
Lord Of The Rings by that Tolkien fella. First time I was 9 years old and it took about half a year. Second time was later, I got so bored during The Two Towers that I gave up.

3. One book you would want on a desert island?
Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson. I could read the first few chapters alone endlessly.

4. One book that made you laugh?
Anansi Boys by Neil Gaiman was the last book that made me laugh out loud.

5. One book that made you cry?
Not quite crying, and not quite one book, but the endings of The Gold Coast and Pacific Edge by Kim Stanley Robinson makes me feel all emotional and maybe a little nostalgic.

6. One book you wish had been written?
How To Build A Teleporter In 5 Easy Steps

7. One book you wish had never had been written?
The Bible.

8. One book you are currently reading?
The SF Masterworks single edition of The Time Machine and War Of The Worlds, by H G Wells.

9. One book you have been meaning to read?
Quite a few on my shelf, including about twenty of the SF Masterworks series. But I'll pick The Algebraist by Iain Banks which is also on my shelf.

10. Now tag five people.
This might not work, but lets pick some authors!
i) William Gibson (well, he's blogging again!)
ii) Neil Gaiman (because he's always short of stuff to blog)
iii) Jay Lake
iv) Paul McAuley
v) Ian McDonald

You never know if you don't try!

Armchair Anarchist at Velcro City started this paticular bit of viral blogging (or reinitialized it after it made the rounds through a few science blogs). I posted my own responses here:

Ooo great tag list James - but why didn't you go ahead and put Harlan Ellison in your list?

;)
